Aboriginal Scholarship

Posted on Dec 14, 2018

We recently decided to provide a "scholarship" to a maximum of $500 for an Aboriginal student going into Year 11 in 2019. With the help of the Ryde Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and Dave Lardner, a Department of Education consultant, schools were canvassed and, based on the criterion of a two-part question, Jayden from Epping Boys' High was selected. Here's Treasurer Bob handing over the cheque (for the school) and a GroTree for Jayden. (13/12/18) The money comes from our recent sale of puddings.

You will notice the Rotary wheel in the background - the Rotary Club of Epping has a long-standing and deep involvement with the school.

Support Cancer Council NSW with Stars of the North – Dance for Cancer event

Stars of the North: Dance For Cancer is a new event in Northern Sydney for Cancer Council NSW. They have 11 local “stars” or community heroes who are learning a dance with a professional dancer that they will then perform at the “Stars of the North” event on Saturday June 4th at the The Concourse in Chatswood.

These local “stars” are all taking themselves out of their comfort zone to raise money and awareness for cancer council.

To book tickets click here

Details on who the stars are can be found here.

Michelle Barry from North Shore Mums Smiles2U

Big thanks to Michelle Barry for talking to our club about North Shore Mums Smiles2U - A fantastic initiative being delivered at Royal North Shore Hospital and Hornsby Hospital!

North Shore Mums Smiles2U is all about bringing a smile to Mums and Children during their hospital stay.

Each year thousands of children are hospitalised, it can make them feel scared, daunted and lonely.

Smiles2U can reduce those feelings by providing a care package filled with fun and crafty items to distract and help pass the time.

Smiles2U have also thought of the Mums. The Mum's self care pack will let them know that we DO care about them and want them to feel loved and cared for.

Smiles2U is seeking interest from local businesses and individuals to support us by donating new craft items, pencils/crayons, stickers, colouring in books, activity books (such as Sudoko) iTunes vouchers etc for our packs.

For the Mum's we are seeking donations of new products such as; hand creams, lip gloss, toothbrushes, toothpastes, deodorant (non spray) pens, mini shampoo/conditioner and body wash.

The Rotary Club of Chatswood Sunrise celebrates it's 30th birthday

The Rotary Club of Chatswood Sunrise celebrated its 30th birthday on Sunday, 11th October. The Club's first President, Dr Warwick Bateman, AM was the guest of honour and the Club donated a bench/seat set to Chatswood High School in his honour.
Local member and NSW Treasurer, Gladys Berejiklian and Honorary Member, Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney, joined in the birthday spirit along with former and current members. The school Jazz Ensemble provided background music as well as "Happy Birthday" which was sung enthusiastically by everyone. Students also helped out in "Cafe Chattie" as baristas and serving the cake and coffee. Chatswood Sunrise is the boutique (never "smallest") of the three Rotary Clubs in Willoughby.
The school site was chosen as the venue because of its historical link with Dr Bateman's ancestor, Isaac Nichols. The border between Nichols' two land grants of 1805 and 1810 runs through the school's oval!

Guest speaker - Tish Peiris

Our guest speaker on Friday 4 September.
A journalist, documentary film maker and disability ambassador with over 15 years of experience as a writer. She has written articles on such diverse subjects as military strategy and the internet to human rights and Burma for Amnesty magazine. Whilst researching cricket in the sub continent she became more aware of the degree of mainstream support for a strict interpretation of Islam. In 2000, she was completing an internship at the ABC and was part of a team that produced a Walkley and Logie award winning report on cricket match fixing for ABC television’s Four Corners. Tish is especially interested in the Middle East as she spent her early childhood living in Beirut during the early 70s before war broke out. That was the time when Lebanon was truly “The Paris of the Middle East.”
